FLORENCE, AL. - The University of North Alabama will host a screening of the documentary The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords on Tuesday, February 28th in celebration of Black History Month. The screening will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Communications building and the event is open to the public. The documentary The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords is an engaging historical chronicle of newspapers that once served as the nation's strongest voice for the African-American community. Emmy and Sundance award-winning filmmaker, Stanley Nelson, reveals the struggles and sacrifices that generations of black journalists had to make in order to get their voices heard in this documentary. The 90-minute documentary screening is part of Black History Month but it also serves as an introductory activity to First Amendment Month events coming up in April. First Amendment Month will focus on the five rights guaranteed by the First Amendment, including freedom of the press, and will feature activities and events on campus that will also be open to the public.
